Yesterday, Detective McCann visited the Falcon’s Nest Pre-K class for a fun round of show-and-tell and to share what it’s like to be a police officer. The kids were full of great questions, big smiles, and even bigger energy!

We tried recruiting a few new officers, but it turns out none of them can reach the pedals in the patrol car—so we’re gonna have to wait a few years!

It was a great way to kick off Mayor Dalina’s Wellness Campaign along with National Bike Month, promoting safe cycling in our community.

As we roll into May, remember these key bike safety tips:

• Follow all traffic laws

Last week, we had the privilege of welcoming some very special visitors to the station for Bring Your Child to Work Day!
Our future officers, dispatchers, and community leaders got a firsthand look at what it means to serve and protect. From trying on gear to touring the station, it was a day filled with learning, laughter, and lots of proud smiles.

Ride Smart. Ride Legal.
We understand the thrill of dirt bikes and ATVs—but safety and legality come first. These vehicles are not permitted on public roadways, and riding illegally can result in fines, impoundments, or worse—injuries.

Please remember: riding on township-owned property is also prohibited—including areas near Helmetta Road, Legends Drive, Wedgewood Drive, Texas Road, and Lower Matchaponix Avenue, to name a few.

And if you see those red and blue lights behind you, don’t run. Fleeing from police puts everyone at risk—including you—and comes with serious consequences.

We encourage riders to enjoy their sport responsibly at approved off-road locations. Always wear protective gear, respect your neighbors, and keep safety the priority.

Suspect Charged in $30,000 Theft of Jewelry

Monroe Township, Middlesex County—On March 27th, 2025, a suspect was charged with third degree theft after an investigation uncovered the suspect had taken jewelry from a residence in which he was working as a painter.

On February 21st, 2025, Sergeant Justin Caruso of The Monroe Township Police Department took a report for a jewelry theft from a residence in town. The victims explained that several pieces of high value jewelry, worth approximately $30,000, had gone missing from a bedroom while renovations were being performed in the house. Although several workers had access to the home, an investigation by Detective Robert Bennett of The Criminal Investigations Division and Troopers Samantha Fleming and Daniela Solano Sarmiento of The New Jersey State Police Polygraph Unit narrowed the list of suspects. The “Lie Detector Test” provided results that indicated Kevin Munoz Reardon of East Windsor, one of the workers, did have knowledge of the theft. Munoz Reardon subsequently returned most of the jewelry that was missing, and was later charged with theft by Detective Bennett.

Chief Griffin Banos of The Monroe Township Police Department cautioned residents about hiring workers for their home. “As Chief of Police, I urge everyone to be cautious and diligent when allowing workers in your home. Always verify credentials, check reviews or references, and ensure they are from a reputable company,” Chief Banos stated. “It’s about safeguarding your family and your piece of mind. A few extra minutes of vetting can prevent serious risks down the line.”

The Monroe Township Police Department has been a proud participant in the Blue Envelope Program since 2023. The Blue Envelope Program enables our officers to partner with the families and drivers on the autism spectrum to improve communication during a traffic stop.

Those interested in participating in Monroe’s Blue Envelope Program should schedule an appointment by contacting Lt. Silvestri at 732-521-0222 ext. 179. During the appointment, you will be provided further information about the program and a Blue Envelope. The envelope is designed to hold the vehicle’s documents along with an information card that will alert the police officer and provide reminders for both the driver and the officer during traffic stops, fostering better communication. #autism #autismawarenessmonth

The Monroe Township Police Department is joining t

The Monroe Township Police Department is joining the nationwide Put the Phone Away or Pay campaign to crack down on distracted driving. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and we’re reminding all drivers: No text, call, or notification is worth a life.

Officers will be out in full force looking for drivers using their phones behind the wheel. If you’re caught texting, scrolling, or holding your phone while driving—you will be ticketed.

Monroe Township, Middlesex County-Stolen box truck

Monroe Township, Middlesex County-Stolen box truck recovered with $100,000 worth of automotive tires.

On March 13th, 2025, Detectives from the Monroe Township Criminal Investigations Bureau responded to a local warehouse for a report of multiple trailers that had been burglarized. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the trailers contained high end tires, which were stolen and loaded into a box truck. As the investigation proceeded further, it was determined that the box truck used during the course of the burglaries was stolen from another nearby warehouse.

Later that evening, Detectives were able to locate the stolen truck with the assistance of the truck owner and The Fairview Police Department. Detectives recovered the vehicle and discovered that all of the proceeds from the burglaries were still inside the vehicle.

At this time the investigation is on-going, as Detectives work to identify suspects in the burglaries. Anyone with information that could assist is asked to contact Detective McCann at 732-521-0222 ext. 163.

Last week, officers from the Monroe Township Police Department had the privilege of participating in the 2025 Law Enforcement Recruitment Fair at Kean University, hosted by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with aspiring law enforcement professionals, share insights about our department, and encourage the next generation of officers. We appreciate everyone who stopped by to learn more about a career in policing!

A huge thank you to Kean University and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office for organizing such a great event. We look forward to future opportunities to engage with our community and recruit dedicated individuals to serve and protect!

On March 12, 2025, a student and teacher from the

On March 12, 2025, a student and teacher from
the Monroe Township Middle School sustained burns as a result of a fire that occurred on school premises.

The student, whose name is withheld, came in contact with an open flame during a cooking class, causing her clothing to ignite. The teacher in charge of the class quickly attempted to smother the flames, however a fire extinguisher was utilized by another student to put out the fire.

As a result of the fire the student suffered burns, and was transported to a burn center via helicopter, according to Monroe Township EMS. Additionally, the teacher suffered minor burns and was transported to a local hospital via ambulance. The additional students in the class who were exposed to the fire extinguisher were evaluated by both school staff and Monroe Township EMS and released.

The school was temporarily evacuated due to the incident; however, students have since returned to the building as the school staff is working with the assistance of the Monroe Township Fire Department to resume normal activities.

We honor their service and sacrifice and extend our deepest condolences to their family, friends, and fellow officers. We also remain hopeful for a full and speedy recovery for the second officer who was injured.

Our hearts are with the entire Newark community during this difficult time.
