🚨 SMiShing SCAM ALERT 🚨
Over the past week, NJ residents have reported receiving fraudulent text messages impersonating the Department of Motor Vehicles and EZ-Pass.

These messages claim:
• You owe payment for a traffic ticket
• Your license or registration will be suspended
• Your credit score will be impacted
• Toll charges will increase

The scam includes a fake link with words like “ezpassnj” and “gov” to appear legitimate. It tricks users into copying the link or replying with “Y” to access a fraudulent website that steals personal and financial info.

🚫 REMEMBER:
• The NJ MVC does NOT send texts about tickets or registration issues.
• EZ-Pass will NOT text you for payment unless your account is in collections with Credit Collection Services (CCS).
• Do NOT click on suspicious links or reply to unknown messages.
• Always visit official websites directly if you’re unsure.

Report suspicious messages by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM) and file a report with the FTC, FBI IC3, or NJCCIC.

Monroe Township Police Officers Rescue Man from Burning Bedroom During Mental Health Crisis

On May 17, 2025, Sergeant Justin Caruso and Officers Wesley Panckeri and Marc Kramer of the Monroe Township Police Department responded to a residence for a welfare check on one of the occupants. Upon arrival, the officers encountered an uncooperative man experiencing a mental health crisis. The individual made multiple threats to harm the officers if they attempted to enter the bedroom.

Despite the tense situation, the officers remained calm and attempted to engage the subject in dialogue. When communication ceased, officers maintained a cautious posture while equipped with less-lethal options, including shields and Taser energy devices, in case further intervention became necessary.

A short time later, smoke was observed coming from the bedroom. Recognizing the imminent danger to the individual inside, the officers made the decision to force entry, despite the threats of violence. Inside the room, the subject was found armed with a knife. The officers were able to safely subdue him using a shield and remove him from the burning room.

After removing the subject, the officers attempted to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher, but required assistance from the Monroe Township Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services to fully manage the scene.

The subject was transported to the hospital for medical treatment and psychological evaluation. All three officers were also transported to a local hospital for evaluation and were released later that day.

“This incident highlights the bravery, compassion, and professionalism of our officers,” said Chief Griffin Banos. “Despite the dangers they faced, they remained calm, made sound decisions under pressure, and ultimately saved a life. I am incredibly proud of their actions. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Monroe Township Fire Department and Monroe Emergency Medical Services for their swift response and vital assistance at the scene.”

Since it is the time of year when the bears are commonly on the move in New Jersey, we would like to share some “Bear Aware” information to stay safe.

If the bear appears aggressive or is located in an enclosure, please dial 911 or contact the Monroe Township Police Department at 732-521-0222.

* Do not feed bears.
* Do not approach bears. Especially feeding bears, which will
aggressively defend their food.
* Do not run from bears. Running may trigger a chase response.
* Do not make direct eye contact. Bears may perceive this as a challenge.

It was a great event to meet with many individuals interested in law enforcement professions and provide them with information about our agency and our hiring process.

Spring is here, and that means ducks, geese, and turtles are on the move—and sometimes in the wrong places!

Recently, Officer Diaz came to the rescue of several ducklings trapped in a storm drain. Thanks to his quick actions, they were safely recovered and brought to a local wildlife rehabilitation center. (We’re happy to report they’re doing just ducky.)

Whether it’s turtles crossing the road or geese blocking traffic like they own the place, please be patient and drive with care. And if you see an animal in trouble, give us a call—we’re always happy to lend a wing.

Yesterday, Detective McCann visited the Falcon’s Nest Pre-K class for a fun round of show-and-tell and to share what it’s like to be a police officer. The kids were full of great questions, big smiles, and even bigger energy!

We tried recruiting a few new officers, but it turns out none of them can reach the pedals in the patrol car—so we’re gonna have to wait a few years!

We understand the thrill of dirt bikes and ATVs—but safety and legality come first. These vehicles are not permitted on public roadways, and riding illegally can result in fines, impoundments, or worse—injuries.

Please remember: riding on township-owned property is also prohibited—including areas near Helmetta Road, Legends Drive, Wedgewood Drive, Texas Road, and Lower Matchaponix Avenue, to name a few.

And if you see those red and blue lights behind you, don’t run. Fleeing from police puts everyone at risk—including you—and comes with serious consequences.

We encourage riders to enjoy their sport responsibly at approved off-road locations. Always wear protective gear, respect your neighbors, and keep safety the priority.

Suspect Charged in $30,000 Theft of Jewelry

Monroe Township, Middlesex County—On March 27th, 2025, a suspect was charged with third degree theft after an investigation uncovered the suspect had taken jewelry from a residence in which he was working as a painter.

On February 21st, 2025, Sergeant Justin Caruso of The Monroe Township Police Department took a report for a jewelry theft from a residence in town. The victims explained that several pieces of high value jewelry, worth approximately $30,000, had gone missing from a bedroom while renovations were being performed in the house. Although several workers had access to the home, an investigation by Detective Robert Bennett of The Criminal Investigations Division and Troopers Samantha Fleming and Daniela Solano Sarmiento of The New Jersey State Police Polygraph Unit narrowed the list of suspects. The “Lie Detector Test” provided results that indicated Kevin Munoz Reardon of East Windsor, one of the workers, did have knowledge of the theft. Munoz Reardon subsequently returned most of the jewelry that was missing, and was later charged with theft by Detective Bennett.

Chief Griffin Banos of The Monroe Township Police Department cautioned residents about hiring workers for their home. “As Chief of Police, I urge everyone to be cautious and diligent when allowing workers in your home. Always verify credentials, check reviews or references, and ensure they are from a reputable company,” Chief Banos stated. “It’s about safeguarding your family and your piece of mind. A few extra minutes of vetting can prevent serious risks down the line.”

The Monroe Township Police Department has been a proud participant in the Blue Envelope Program since 2023. The Blue Envelope Program enables our officers to partner with the families and drivers on the autism spectrum to improve communication during a traffic stop.

Those interested in participating in Monroe’s Blue Envelope Program should schedule an appointment by contacting Lt. Silvestri at 732-521-0222 ext. 179. During the appointment, you will be provided further information about the program and a Blue Envelope. The envelope is designed to hold the vehicle’s documents along with an information card that will alert the police officer and provide reminders for both the driver and the officer during traffic stops, fostering better communication. #autism #autismawarenessmonth
